Natural Language Processing and Understanding (NLP&U) techniques were traditionally used to enable linguistic studies and to enable us to understand verbal interaction. In recent years, however, the applications of NLP&U extended to include dialogue systems especially for cognitive robots, games, new media writing, alternative interfaces such as hand writing and voice recognition, etc. This expansion emphasized some existing issues in NLP such as testing and corpus development, whilst new issues emerged requiring innovative solutions.

This session aims to provide a meeting point for researchers in Natural Language Processing and Understanding (NLP&U) to report on current projects and recent advances especially for those who are working with non-Latin languages and computational intelligence approaches to NLP&U.

The topics of the session are, but not limited to:
1- NLP techniques for non-Latin languages.
2- Neural networks techniques in NLP and NLU.
3- Fuzzy logic and linguistic reasoning
4- Corpus development, management and validation
5- Alternative computational intelligence techniques to NLP and NLU.
6- Applications of NLP and NLU especially in dialogue based systems.
7- Narratives, linguistic generative systems for new media writing, digital fiction and gaming.
